San Antonio.- Guess who benefits when you get 1,500 runners and walkers strapping on their running or walking shoes on a brisk Thanksgiving Day morning? The San Antonio Food Bank and the families it serves.
The 4th Annual H-E-B Great Turkey Challenge 5K had the most runners ever, according to one long-time runner, and because it reached that number of runners and walkers, the Food Bank can provide 5,000 turkeys this holiday season for the people it serves thanks to H-E-B.
“For every $10 generated by the donations, the San Antonio Food Bank will provide one turkey to a needy family this holiday season,” Veronica S. Laurel, Food Bank spokesperson, told La Prensa.
Eric S. Cooper, President/CEO, San Antonio Food Bank, took it one step further.
“Thanksgiving is the one meal of the year where families come together around the dinner table and make memories that last a lifetime. We are trying to create those memories for families in need in our community,”
They began showing up as early as 7:30am, getting ready for the beginning of the race one hour later. The starts were staggered into three groups with last group having the most contestants, including such groups as the 4H Giblets, complete with tutus and their faithful four-legged companions.
While the best showing was the 5,000 H-E-B turkeys, some people actually want to know who won. In the Female Class, it was Carrie Dyer with a time of 20:29. Her male counterpart, David Lazarine bested her with a 17:31 time. BTW 5K is 3-poimt-1 miles.
