Central Market’s Hatch Chile Festival is as festive as Christmas. Crowds gather to watch chefs roast, dice, sweeten and otherwise prepare the seasonal treat and get a taste of the long-awaited flavor of the Hatch chile only available for a short while in late summer. Unlike Christmas, the festival lasts almost two weeks until August 21.
Central Market describes the event as “a salute to the seasonal return of the world-famous peppers that are harvested for only a few weeks out of the year.”
Short harvest is long on taste
The short harvest makes the Hatch chiles even more delectable. The world-renowned pepper is named after Hatch, New Mexico and the flavor ranges from mild to hotter than jalapeños, depending on how brave your mood.
Central Market makes it easy to be part of the Hatch Chile Festival -- you can cook, judge, run or simply eat your way through the annual two-week long party.
Over the years creative cooks have redefined how we view spice. Central Market offers savory, sweet, and even refreshing recipes to complement the unique Hatch chile.
Central Market challenges patrons to “Feel the burn in our buttery scones, singe your sweet tooth with Hatch brownies, or experience the raw flavor of our favorite green chile in Hatch sushi!”
If you think you can add to this unusual list of recipes then get your apron out because Central Market will host the sixth annual recipe contest. Past winners range from spiced-up classics like Hatched Crème Brulee to more wild combinations like Hatch Avocado Milkshake. Some contestants even added heat to the refreshing poolside favorite by adding the signature chili to a traditional favorite with the Pina Colada with a Hatch Twist.
Contestants can enter the sizzling recipe online until August 13. Dishes will be judged for creativity, tastiness, and presentation. Seven finalists and one grand prize winner will be selected at each local store. The winner will receive 75 lbs of Hatch chiles and a $100 gift card to Central Market ao they can keep cooking up sizzling favorites.
Perhaps you prefer having an excuse to taste the spicy specialties rather than cook them. Who wouldn’t? Well it’s your lucky day because anyone can sign up to judge the recipe contest. Central Market will randomly select one judge for each store. Simply enter your information by midnight August 13 if you think you can handle the heat.
