Caiman crocodile devours girl in Brazilian Amazon

08 de febrero de 2010

Brasilia, Feb 8 (EFE).- A caiman crocodile devoured an 11-year-old girl in a rural area of the western Brazilian state of Rondonia, the media reported Monday.

The girl, identified as Gigliane Nascimento Bira, was playing with her brother on a riverbank when she was seized and dragged underwater by the giant reptile, the Web site Portalamazonia of the Globo network said.

The incident occurred Sunday, and only after eight hours of searching did the firefighters' emergency services manage to find and slay the caiman, which still had with it some of the girl's remains.

The firefighters killed the animal, which was 4.5 meters (15 feet) long and weighed an estimated 350 kilos (770 pounds), and recovered the girl's remains, which were buried Monday.
