Running for the homeless

12 de febrero de 2010

La Prensa de San Antonio.- On Saturday, February 20, two local, avid runners, Elizabeth Rosenblum and Megan Cullip, will be hosting the “Street 2 Feet” 5K Run/Walk and Kidz’ 400 meters to increase awareness about the homeless population in San Antonio and to raise funds for SAMMinistries.

The shelter provides an array of programs and services available to the homeless of San Antonio such as life skills, job training, financial management, computer skills and parenting classes. Guests also have access to medical and dental facilities and each program is designed to provide them with the basic tools necessary to return to the path of self-sufficiency.

“Street 2 Feet” will begin at the SAMMinistries Emergency Shelter at the corner of Buena Vista and Frio Streets downtown, and end at their future location on the Haven for Hope campus.

Be sure to set your alarm –the walk starts at 8:00 a.m. and the kids’ 400 meter race is at 9:15 a.m. The cost for adults is $20, and ten for kids. Don’t delay! After February 18, they’ll add five bucks to both adults and kids entry fee.

According to the race director, José Iniguez, this affordable 5K is one of the few that goes through downtown and is the only race to pass in front of the Alamo. “Only the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure and the Rock ‘n’ Roll San Antonio Marathon are held downtown,” he said, “plus they are much more expensive.”

You can register online at www.active.com, or by visiting the SAMMinistries’ website at www.samm.org, in “Upcoming Events.”

If you prefer to register in-person you may do so by paying with a check or cash at the following places: Roger Soler’s Sports at 5933 Broadway, Run Gear Run on 18720 Stone Oak Parkway Suite, Fleet Feet Sports on 6408 North New Braunfels, or Run Wild Sports on 300 East Grayson.

Registration packets may be picked up before race day on Friday, February 19 from 2:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Run Gear Run. All participants will receive a free t-shirt and snacks!

Sponsors for the race include Flasher Equipment Company, Run Gear Run, Tesoro, HEB and Spectrum.
