Pretoria, Feb 19 (EFE).- Olympic track star Oscar Pistorius told a South African court Tuesday that he did not plan to kill his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, as prosecutors allege.
"I deny the allegation in the strongest terms. Nothing can be further from the truth," Pistorius told the Pretoria court in an affidavit read by his attorney, Barry Roux.
Prosecutors are alleging premeditated murder in the case and the court will have to decide whether to grant bail.
"I fail to understand how I could be charged with murder, let alone premeditated murder because I had no intention to kill my girlfriend," Pistorius said in his affidavit.
Judge Desmond Nair told the defense and prosecution, however, that premeditation cannot be ruled out in the case.
The 26-year-old Pistorius was so distraught during the hearing that the judge urged him to maintain his composure.
Pistorius was charged on Valentine's Day with murdering his girlfriend, a model who was found dead of four gunshot wounds at his home in Pretoria.
The sprinter - famed for competing in the Olympic Games despite two leg amputations - claims he thought an intruder was in the bathroom and fired through the door, hitting Steenkamp.
"I was scared and didn't switch on the light. I got my gun and moved towards the bathroom. I screamed at the intruder because I did not have my legs on I felt vulnerable. I fired shots through the bathroom door and told Reeva to call police," the runner said in his affidavit.
Pistorius made history last July in London when he became the first double-amputee track athlete to compete in the Olympic Games. He went on to qualify for the semifinals in the men's 400 meters.
Nicknamed "Blade Runner" (a reference to the Ridley Scott film and the fact he runs with high-tech, carbon-fiber prosthetics on both legs), Pistorius has won six Paralympic gold medals.
