Guatemala City, Feb 28 (EFE).- The fourth attack this year on Guatemala's National Police has left two officers dead, an interior ministry official said Thursday.
The incident occurred Wednesday night in San Sebastian, a town in the northwestern province of Huehuetenango, when a police vehicle came under attack from gunmen in at least five vehicles.
Pedro Aceituno and Hector Morales died at the scene, while a deputy inspector, identified as Jose Amilcar Martinez, was wounded.
The initial investigative hypothesis in the attack is that it was staged by drug traffickers, the interior ministry official told Efe.
On Jan. 26, two other police officers were killed on a busy avenue in the western part of the capital as they were pursuing several criminals.
One day later, two other officers were wounded in a hail of bullets in the eastern city of Jalapa.
Then, on Jan. 30, officers Amilcar Rivera and Alex Francisco Lemus Cortez were murdered in the southeastern part of the capital as they were transporting convicted murder Ana Liseth Rodriguez to a clinic.
