Bogota, Mar 4 (EFE).- World No. 3 Maria Sharapova of Russia will play an exhibition match in Colombia in December, organizers said.
"It is true, Maria Sharapova will play in an exhibition match on Dec. 6 in Colombia, in Bogota. The deal was done in December of last year," Producciones Grand Slam spokesman Jaime Bernal told Efe.
The Russian star, who apparently turned down offers for different reasons to visit Colombia in past years, "managed this time to arrange her schedule to squeeze out two days during which she will take part in some social activities in Bogota, as well as the exhibition match," Bernal said.
Sharapova's rival has not been determined, but Producciones Grand Slam is looking at two former No. 1 players - Serbia's Anna Ivanovic and Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki.
The venue has not been booked, "but we believe that it will be at Coliseo El Campin," Bernal said, adding that organizers were also looking at the old Santamaria bull ring.
Sharapova will be the latest tennis star to visit the Colombian capital.
Swiss great Roger Federer, Spanish star Rafael Nadal, world No. 1 Novak Djokovic and French star Jo-Wilfried Tsonga have visited in recent years.
Former ATP Tour stars Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi have also played exhibition matches in Colombia.
