Madrid, Mar 6 (EFE).- Queen Sofia, the crown prince with his wife and children, and several politicians on Wednesday visited Spain's King Juan Carlos in the Madrid hospital where he is recovering from surgery to repair a slipped disc.

From the hospital, the king on Wednesday sent a telegram to the vice president of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, with a message of condolence to the South American nation over the death on Tuesday of President Hugo Chavez, officials with the Royal Palace said.

In the message, the king recalled the "resolve and dedication" Chavez had shown for Venezuela and for Ibero-America as a whole.

Upon leaving the hospital accompanied by Crown Prince Felipe and his family on Wednesday evening, Queen Sofia remarked that Juan Carlos was doing "very well," corroborating what the medical report released at midday had said.

The king is performing the rehabilitation exercises ordered by the medical team "perfectly normally," according to the medical report.

Among the other visitors the king received on Wednesday was the leader of the main opposition Socialists, Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba, who upon leaving the hospital said that he had noted that the king's "pains have disappeared" in the wake of the surgery.

The speaker of the lower house of Parliament, Jesus Posada, also visited the monarch, along with judiciary chief Gonzalo Moliner, Senate president Pio Garcia Escudero and national ombud Soledad Becerril, all of whom agreed in their assessments that the patient was doing very well.
