Brussels, Mar 26 (EFE) .- European Union High Representative Federica Mogherini warned on Thursday that the deteriorating security situation in Yemen would have serious consequences on the region.

"The latest events in Yemen have dramatically worsened the already fragile situation in the country and risk having serious regional consequences," Mogherini said in a statement.

Mogherini further stressed her disagreement with the military intervention, expressing her belief that political means are the only avenue to sincere resolution.

"I'm convinced that military action is not a solution. Only a broad political consensus through negotiations can provide a sustainable solution, restore peace, and preserve the unity and territorial integrity of Yemen," Mogherini noted.

"Otherwise, the ability of extremist and terrorist groups to take advantage of the situation is likely to increase dramatically," Mogherini explained.

Mogherini described the advance of Houthi forces, and that of military units loyal to ex-President Saleh, toward Aden on Tuesday as "unacceptable steps."

"The Yemeni civilian population, already affected by dire living conditions, are the first victims of the current military escalation," Mogherini stated.

Mogherini called upon all regional actors to act responsibly and constructively, to urgently create the conditions necessary for a return to negotiations.

"The EU reiterates its support to all efforts currently undertaken to this effect, in particular those of the UN and of regional actors," Mogherini added.

Saudi Arabia and several other countries launched airstrikes on Thursday morning against Houthi rebel locations in Yemen, answering the call of Yemeni President Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi for a military intervention to repel the Houthi offensive.
