Tegucigalpa, Dec 2 (EFE).- Hundreds of Honduran peasants marched peacefully in this capital on Thursday to demand a solution to a conflict over land in the northern Caribbean region of Bajo Aguan, where five peasants were killed last month in a confrontation with private security guards.
The event was organized by the transnational peasant organization Via Campesina and several Honduran groups.
The aim of the protest was to persuade President Porfirio Lobo's government to apply the country's Agrarian Reform Law in Bajo Aguan, a Via Campesina spokesperson told journalists.
Peasants in Bajo Aguan have long carried out occupations of land held by wealthy farmers and agribusiness concerns.
A score of people, most of them farm laborers, have died in Bajo Aguan since November 2009 in sporadic clashes between landless peasants and security guards working for landowners. The most recent incident took place last month on a palm plantation run by agribusiness mogul Miguel Facusse.
After the deadly confrontation, Lobo's government sent police and troops to Bajo Aguan with orders to disarm anyone they encounter carrying weapons.
Officials in Tegucigalpa have also suggested - without offering any evidence - that peasants in the region were receiving guns from allies in neighboring Nicaragua.
